![]() I think there's room for Windows 10 to sneak in and eat Apple's lunch, too. It's no wonder ChromeOS is growing at such a rapid rate. When I saw that price I thought, are you kidding me? Here's a company that has seen consecutive declines in Mac sales and yet it introduces a computer that isn't affordable or attractive to the mass market. A shopper needs to cough up at least $1,799 for a new MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. Apple spent a lot of time discussing how it's moving past the function keys, suggesting those were too old school for modern times, yet is actually selling a MacBook Pro with the function keys for $1,499. "Wildy Expensive.room for ChromeOS and Windows 10 to sneak in." "I think the new MacBook Pro computers are wildly expensive. It also seems like Apple did the best it could to update all of the hardware components given its constraints." Touch Bar innovative. "I think the Touch Bar is very innovative and a real improvement for the laptop. As competitors raise their pricing on their own high-end models, raising the bar allows Apple to retain its claim to the premium space. "Last but not least, if you are going to market a luxury brand, you need luxury level pricing to go with it. By raising prices across the MacBook Pro line they fix that problem, creating a clear price/feature staircase for the customer. "It addresses a problem they had with the launch of the 12-inch MacBook at $1,299 in 2015, as that product then had an equivalent price to the entry level MacBook Pro, with arguably a weaker feature set. This will drive a similar change across their notebooks. The iPhone average price increased with the introduction of the larger smartphones, as did the iPad average with the launch of the iPad Pros. ![]() "The increases, while surprising, are completely in line with the changes that Apple has been making across its other product lines. Rhoda Alexander, Director Tablet and Notebook PCs, IHS Markit Technology:Ĭost in line with Apple pricing trends. If that is true, it’s just not good and I’d argue that Apple needs to think about spinning the Macintosh off where it can flourish." It’s almost as though Apple is limiting innovation in MacOS and the Macintosh because they fear cannibalizing the iPad Pro lineup. "I almost wonder if Apple’s problem is an internal struggle on whether to push iPads over Macs. But you can’t give people who buy a $2,500 MacBook Pro the same feature set?" You can get pen support in Microsoft’s cheap little Surface 3. Watching the demo where the DJ is relying on a tiny touch strip was simply painful. My fear is it’ll be neglected for another four years again."Īpple Touch Bar demo painful to watch: "The real disappointment to me is Apple being so stubborn in not adopting touch and pen support in the MacBook Pro. "Now to be fair to Apple, a lot of people will say why not wait another three months or so for the new 7th Gen quad-core Kaby Lake CPUs rather than use a 6th gen Skylake chip? Of course, the same critics (myself included) who say that have been beating up Apple for months for saying 'why haven’t you updated the MacBook Pro in years?' so what can Apple do? Hopefully they actually upgrade the lineup though. ( Note that Lisa Gade at echoed some of these concerns in her review of the base unit.**) Forget about ever upgrading that drive in four years if that’s true."* ![]() I’m also not happy with what looks like soldered down SSDs in the new lineup. ![]() why not give users more performance too? Having no configurations with more than 16GB of RAM is also not good for professionals who are some of the folks who really can use 32GB or more in a laptop. Thin doesn’t really get you much when you can’t get the weight down and at 4 lbs. "I’m disappointed Apple is embracing thin over pure performance which I think users of the MacBook Pro 15 want and need.
